Single Lady Syndrome

Single Ladies,

Say Hello to Dana.  She is the writer for a lovely blog I follow, Dana Treat - Treat Yourself.  Now, the reason I'm introducing you to her and showing you this recent picture of her on her 40th birthday - is because recently I'm hearing a lot of single women worrying over their future singleness.  And I know this is a common worry for single women, I think its a common worry for not-single women who aren't engaged and/or married yet.  But since that's the topic here's some things I've been hearing...

I'm already __ years old, and I'm still single and haven't found the right guy.
Or,
What's wrong with me?  Why haven't I found someone yet?
Or my personal favorite,
I never saw myself being at this place, at my age... I always thought I'd be married, with kids, blah blah blah.

Guess what?  Nearly everyone feels that way.  Everyone thought by 25 they'd be married, with a kid, have the perfect office job, a house and a boat load of cash to have fabulous vacations with - but it doesn't always turn out that way.  Good grief, I'm about to clench my 7 year anniversary and while I thought I'd be married already, I also thought I'd have a full-time job in the field I studied and be well on my way to a great worry-free life, but that is too not the case.

Now back to Dana.  She just turned 40 and published a post reflecting on being 40 and the last 10 years of her life.  I just want to share with you her reflections....

My 30’s were quite a decade. I started them untangling myself from a disastrous relationship and working at a job that I hated. Just a few short months later, I met Randy and everything changed.  In the last 10 years I have…

gotten married
had two children
trained to teach yoga
taught yoga
moved to London and back again
traveled a fair amount
bought and sold two houses
started a personal chef business
stopped my personal chef business
started my blog

Can you believe all of that happened after 30 and all within 10 years?

So to all you single women who worry you'll turn into a spinster because you're in your twenties, still single, just got out of a horrible relationship, in a relationship but not married yet, hate the job you're in, haven't found a job, whatever the case may be - take this as a premium example that life is about the journey, the path you're on, not about the race to the finish line.

Enjoy it.

Embrace it.

Oh, and check out Dana's blog, it's fabulous.

  1. Erin, thank you so much for this tribute. I am really touched. It is so easy to always be looking ahead to the next thing and worrying about why your life isn't the way you think it SHOULD be. I still do it even though I have the wisdom of years. :) I hate phrases like "stop and smell the roses" but sometimes they are true. Enjoy where you are and the rest will fall into place.
